800-seat hawker centre, indoor sports hall to open at Bukit Canberra

800-seat hawker centre, indoor sports hall to open at Bukit Canberra. From the third quarter of this year, residents in the Sembawang area will have access to an 800-seat hawker centre and an indoor sports hall.

When finished, the Bukit Canberra integrated sports and community hub will include the first polyclinic nestled within community facilities.

“Because we have an aging population in the northern part of Singapore, it will supplement the current infrastructure for primary care in the area,” said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung on Sunday (June 5).

The polyclinic will provide a variety of medical services, such as acute and chronic disease treatment, as well as women’s health services such as cervical and breast cancer screening.

“I hope we can combine healthcare with all of the social activities to bring about preventive care and healthy living for the residents of this town,” said Mr Ong during a visit to the Canberra Link construction site.

The opening date of the polyclinic has yet to be determined.

Sport Singapore’s 12ha hub will open in the first half of 2020, bringing together multiple agencies including the People’s Association, Ministry of Health, and National Parks Board.

It will eventually have five swimming pools and the largest ActiveSG gym in Singapore.

Canberra House, formerly the old Admiralty House, will be transformed into a library.

“Because of Covid-19, we’ve been delayed 112 to two years… we will see the facilities open up gradually, and I hope that once it opens, residents know and feel that it’s worth the wait,” Mr Ong explained.

Fellow Sembawang GRC MPs Poh Li San, Vikram Nair, and Lim Wee Kiak accompanied him on the site visit.

The hawker center, which is nearly finished, will have 44 stalls.

To reduce the facility’s environmental footprint, it will be outfitted with sustainability features such as a food digester as part of a food waste conveyance system.

The indoor sports hall can accommodate 12 badminton courts, three basketball courts, or three volleyball courts.

The hall could also accommodate 2,000 people for community events at the same time, or it could be reconfigured with a retractable seating gallery that could seat up to 500 people at the same time.

In the coming months, the hub will host events such as Pesta Sukan (Malay for “sports festival”) in July and the Sembawang GRC National Day 2022 observance ceremony in August.
